Questions regarding Palm Kernal Oil, Sunflower Oil or Safflower Oil

PLEASE NOTE: Customers may have purchased products that have older packaging
still listing Palm Kernel Oil – Sunflower Oil – or – Safflower Oil as an ingredient.
The product purchased does not contain any of these oils. NONE. The use of these
oils was discontinued in January of 2019. Being an environmentally conscious
company we may have used some older wrappers or packaging after eliminating the
oils listed above. At the time we felt it was of value to have them not end up in a
land fill somewhere. Rest assured these oils are not in any of the products we sell
and the wrappers and packaging listing them are being or have been replaced.

Thank you for our understanding.

Do you use GMO's or Palm Oil?

We DO NOT use GMO’s or Palm Oil

Due to issues regarding the use of Palm Kernel Oil we have elected to remove this ingredient from all J.R.LIGGETT’S products as of January 1st. 2018.

About Our Shampoo

How do I use the shampoo for best results?

Always wet hair and bar first, then rub the bar directly onto your hair until you get the level of lather you want. For long hair bring the rest of your hair up to the top of your head and lather all together. Scrub hair and scalp thoroughly and immediately rinse. Always rinse with warm, not hot, water.

An ACV (apple cider vinegar) wash can be used after shampooing with the bar if you feel a need for it. Mix about a tablespoon of ACV with about a cup of warm water.

After shampooing and rinsing, apply the ACV wash to your hair and let it sit for a couple of minutes, then rinse it out. The smell of vinegar will completely dissipate when your hair is dried. After showering with the ACV rinse, it is often easier to comb your hair than when using commercial leave-in conditioners!

How do I deal with hard water?

You can fake soft water by using a baking soda/water rinse. Mix a small amount of baking soda (about a half tablespoon) with a cup or so of warm water and apply it to your dry hair in the shower. Then, before using any hard water on your hair, lather up with the J.R.LIGGETT’S. Next, rinse thoroughly with the hard water. The only time hard water is really an issue is while lathering – it’s fine for a rinse.

An ACV (apple cider vinegar) wash can be used after shampooing with the bar if you feel a need for it. Mix about a tablespoon of ACV with about a cup of warm water.

Why isn’t the shampoo bar working well for me?

Many people find that there is a transition period after switching to bar shampoo. Your hair and scalp can go through an adjustment period where they learn to balance oil production again, and rid themselves of years of accumulated detergents and chemicals.

An ACV (apple cider vinegar) wash can be used to speed up this process, and as a conditioner when needed. Mix about a tablespoon of ACV with about a cup of warm water.

After shampooing and rinsing, apply the ACV wash to your hair and let it sit for a couple of minutes, then rinse it out. The smell of vinegar will completely dissipate when your hair is dried. What formula is best for my hair?

There are many factors that affect someone’s hair that we cannot recommend a single formula. A person’s age, climate, hair type, and natural oil-production all come into play, creating a unique environment for our products.

In general we recommend starting of with the Original Formula, as that has been the most widely received over the years. Our .65 oz mini bars offer a wonderful opportunity to experiment with all six varieties without breaking the bank.

With our varied formulas, there is certainly something for everyone! If you find that one formula is not what you hoped it would be, please try another.

Is it only for hair?

Our shampoos are very versatile. They also serve as a mild body soap, work wonderfully for all your shaving needs, and are great for washing dishes while camping. It can even serve as a toothpaste in a pinch. Just swipe your toothbrush over the bar and into some baking soda and brush away!

Why should I switch to bar shampoo from liquid shampoo?

Your hair needs some of its natural oils to be healthy. Liquid detergent shampoo strips ALL of the oils from your hair, putting your scalp into over drive. This leads to either overproduction of oil, creating oily hair, or underproduction, causing dry scalp and hair. Our shampoo bars normalize a person’s oil secretion and create a better environment for hair that looks and feels healthier.

Since it is not a liquid, each bar offers the approximate number of usages as a 24 ounce bottle of most modern shampoos. The savings can really add up!

What is NOT in the shampoo?

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
  • Parabens
  • Sulfates
  • Synthetic Fragrances
  • Animal Products
  • Soy Products
  • Gluten
  • GMO’s
  • Preservatives
  • Artificial Colorants
  • Dairy Products

Are your shampoo bars safe for nut allergy sufferers and are they vegan and gluten free?

Our Original and Herbal formulas contain no nut oils. All of our bars are gluten free, soy free, and contain no animal products or peanut oil. For those with sunflower allergies, our Moisturizing formula has no sunflower oil.

How does your shampoo lather without sodium lauryl sulfate?

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is the primary lathering ingredient in most liquid shampoos. Our shampoos don’t need SLS because they are made through an entirely different process know as saponification. Our luxurious lather is created by the coconut oil. You can read more about the history and science behind this natural process HERE.

Here is an article about SLS: http://jrliggett.com/newsletters/2010/April-SLS.html

I do not want to put chemicals on my body or my pets’ body and although I am interested in using your shampoo, I am concerned about the sodium hydroxide in it. How is this safe?

We use sodium hydroxide (lye) in the production of our shampoo bars. The end product has no sodium hydroxide left because it goes through a chemical transformation called saponification. This is the process of making soap that has been used for hundreds of years.

We combine food-grade vegetable oils with sodium hydroxide at a specific temperature. The two different ingredients combine to create a totally new product called soap or in our instance shampoo.

Here is an article about how we make our shampoo: http://www.jrliggett.com/newsletters/articles/soap-saponification.html

Are your ingredients organic?

We use mostly natural oils in our products, as there is no direct advantage in using Organic Oils in our manufacturing process.

When we manufacture our shampoo, all of the oils we use are combined with sodium hydroxide and are chemically changed to the point that the unique properties separating natural from organic are virtually eliminated by nature of the “saponification” process the individual ingredients go through to become a singular new item called soap, or in our instance a shampoo bar (because of the formulation we use).

By not using organic oils in our formulations we can save customers a great deal of money and not suffer any loss in quality what so ever. Where Organic Oils can make a noticeable difference is when they are taken internally or used topically. We do use Organic Oils in some products like our Foam Face & Body Washes, as well as four of our most popular Bar Shampoos, where they can be used directly.

In the instance of our Jojoba & Peppermint Shampoos, the Organic Jojoba Oils are added just before the end of the mixing process, so as to keep as much of the original properties of the Organic Oils intact. This is where Organic Oils are used in a proper manner. Where they can be utilized by the body.

Where is your Vitamin E derived from?

Our Vitamin E is derived from plants, is 100% natural and is GMO free.

I am sensitive to many fragrances. Could you please tell me what essential oils are used in your bars?

Our fragrances are simply pure essential oils. We use no synthetic fragrances. Our Moisturizing and Coconut & Argan Oil formulas have no fragrances. The Tea Tree & Hemp formula has no fragrance added but does contain tea tree oil. The Original formula contains rose oil, and the Herbal formula contains rosemary, lavender and cedar wood oil. Finally, the Jojoba & Peppermint formula contains peppermint oil.

Are J.R.LIGGETT’S shampoo bars safe for color-treated hair?

Our shampoo is safe for most permanently colored hair. Hair colored with henna and also very dark reds may experience some change.

What is the pH of J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo?

Our shampoo bars are on the alkaline side, but that is good. A pH-balanced shampoo is not ideal since skin itself is not truly acidic and does not need balancing. It does that on its own! The acidic conditions of skin are created by normal secretions from sweat glands and the breakdown of fatty acids on the skin. This creates the acid mantle, a protective natural covering. After you bathe, the skin immediately begins re-secreting this mantle. Unless you are using a shampoo that is extremely acidic or alkaline, you cannot change the natural pH of your skin secretions.

So called “pH balanced” shampoos are more acidic than natural shampoos, and they achieve this by adding synthetic detergents and chemicals. These additives remove the natural fatty acids and oils from your skin and prevent your skin from balancing its own pH. Our shampoos retain these natural oils and leave your skin healthy and balanced.

Does your shampoo have an expiration date?

We tell our resellers the expiration is a year, so they can ensure a fresh stock is always on hand.  Our shampoo will stay fresher, longer, the cooler it is kept.  We recommend freezing any extra bars you have, as it will essentially suspend the aging process of the shampoo. When you take them out, they will be as fresh and effective as when you bought them.

What happens to the shampoo when it is not stored in the freezer?

Our bars keep best when allowed to dry between use. We highly recommend our wooden shampoo shelf for this purpose.

Air and temperature will take its toll over time. It will still be usable but it will first lose its fragrance, then get harder and ultimately turn a darker color.

These bars are made from all natural oils and have a life span of their own. They live and die as everything else on this planet.

What shampoo bar is most comparable to the Ultra Balanced bar?

The Coconut and Argan formula is the closest. It’s a good idea to try the different bars as you may find different results with each. Our ingredient list can be found HERE.

What shampoo bar is most comparable to the Damaged Hair bar?

The Moisturizing bar is the new formulation of the Damaged Hair bar, but without the fragrance.

I find that if your shampoo gets into my eyes the sting is severe.  The list of ingredients has nothing that would cause this to happen. What causes your shampoo to sting my eyes?

Our shampoos are made with saponified oils that can cause a burning sensation if you get them in your eyes. You won’t go blind but it can be irritating if it happens so please always keep your eyes closed when using any shampoo on your hair and head. Please use care when bathing infants. So called “tear-free” baby shampoo will have the same effect on the eyes, but contains a synthetic numbing agent to mask the stinging.

I’ve purchased several of your shampoo bars online and am bothered by the fact that all of them state 3.5 oz, when in fact, they weigh slightly less fully packaged. Why the weight discrepancy?

Our bars do weigh in at 3.5 oz when first made, but after that they continue to lose moisture and become harder. You will get just as many usages so the actual weight is a bit immaterial. Our bars are entirely different from buying a liquid that does not loose weight being confined by a plastic bottle.

Do you use GMO’s or Palm Oil?

We DO NOT use GMO’s or Palm Oil

Due to issues regarding the use of Palm Kernel Oil we have elected to remove this ingredient from all J.R.LIGGETT’S products as of January 1st. 2018.

J.R.LIGGETT’S is entirely committed to sustainable sourcing and protecting the earth we all share for future generations to enjoy.

Why was my credit card declined?

Most of credit cards are declined because “ Neither the ZIP nor the address matches.”  You may have some details on file with your credit card issuer that are not current or accurate.  This type of decline is often from incorrect billing information on file with them.

A secondary possibility is a “Do not honor” response from our credit card processor. Typically, it means insufficient funds, fraud control, or some type of issue with the cardholder’s bank. Please contact your bank for more information.

How come my order did not go through but I was still charged?

This happens for debit card transactions.  Transactions declined while using a debit card do not wash out of the system as they normally do for other credit cards.  For some reason, the pre-charge hangs up in the system and is shown as a charge on the customers account even though no charge has gone through.  If this happens please contact us to confirm your order has not gone through.  If it has not, you will need to contact your bank and tell them your order did not go through.  They will simply remove the “charge” from your account.
